In this How to Make Perfect Brown Rice post I give you my recipe and method for cooking brown rice on the stove top. The results are a fluffy and flavorful brown rice that can be used in any recipe or side dish.
Every time my mom wants to make rice she calls me to ask for my advice and tips; which I love, but also find funny because growing up she always made some really great rice. I’ve always been able to make great brown rice, fluffy and perfect for anything I wanted to use it for. However I would have just described it as “average”. It tasted great but was not the perfect brown rice. All of that changed one night when I just happened to be in the right place at the right time.
I was at one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in Las Vegas, NV, El Dorado Cantina, when their Chef decided to come out and greet a few tables. He was at the table behind me when I overheard them asking him what the secret to his rice was. All their food is great, but the rice let me to tell you is out-of-this-world good. I rarely eat rice alone but this is some you can really chow down on. The Chef chuckled and said simply “butter, everyone is afraid of butter but it makes all the difference”.
Talk about a light bulb moment, I’ve always played with using or not using the “optional” butter amount suggested on the bag of brown rice. While I never noticed much of a difference, this conversation made me realize that maybe you just need more butter to make the perfect brown rice. Now I will never again skip the butter when making brown rice. I do recommend that you only use organic butter from grass-fed cows as it can be healthy for you when used responsibly. Organic butter from grass-fed cows contain more healthy nutrients than other butter including Vitamin K, omega-3’s, and saturated fats.
Making the perfect brown rice is really not difficult and can be done with just 4 ingredients and one pot with a lid. You’re going to add water, salt, and butter to a pot; bring to a boil, add your rice, cover and cook. I do stir occasionally which helps me keep an eye on the cook progress. If your rice gets done before your water is gone simply drain the excess, if all your water boils off before the rice is done just add more and continue cooking. Remember to TASTE your rice, this is the only way to ensure your perfect brown rice is done to perfection. Once done I either use it right away or for all the batch cooking fans tuck it in the fridge for later once cooled.
